Supports Construction for Sustainable and Livable Cities
With support from the Caterpillar Foundation, the World Resources Institute (WRI)'s Sustainable and Livable Cities initiative has come to a productive conclusion. On September 20, WRI held a symposium on the achievements of the initiative and the shift to low-carbon urban development in Beijing, attended by Qihua Chen, Vice President of Caterpillar Inc. and Chairman of Caterpillar (China) Investment Co., Ltd.
The initiative has developed more than 20 research reports and tools in the fields of climate change, water resources, transportation and energy, including studies and plans for low-carbon development at national, provincial, city and community levels as well as policy proposals for low-carbon city development.
¡°Caterpillar and the Caterpillar Foundation are truly delighted with the program¡¯s achievements, and hope such deliverables can offer effective support and reference for authorities to define development strategies and plans for low-carbon development, and finally help China fulfill its 2013 carbon emissions goals,¡± said Qihua Chen. ¡°In the meanwhile, we also look forward to working with partners from related industries, universities and research institutes under the auspices of the government, to protect and improve the environment while facilitating economic development, making our contribution to building a more beautiful China.¡±
The Sustainable and Livable Cities Initiative was officially launched in February 2012. The initiative gained support from the Department of Climate Change under the National Development and Reform Commission, and selected Chengdu and Qingdao as pilot cities. The focus of the initiative was on the challenges and opportunities facing Chinese cities in the fields of water resources, transport and energy during the process of urbanization, and aimed to propose customized and feasible solutions from the perspective of low-carbon development.
When Panzhihua was hit by heavy rain and floods in late September, the China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation, with support from the Caterpillar Foundation, utilized its Disaster Preparedness and Mitigation Special Fund to provide family emergency boxes with supplies to 150 affected households in Wuben Village in Renhe District and 571 affected households in Ala Village, to help residents survive the disaster.

Caterpillar Foundation Supports Water Projects in Remote Mountainous Areas
Two small centralized water supply projects built with assistance from the Caterpillar Foundation in the remote mountainous areas of Chongqing have been recently completed. They will provide water to about 3,600 people in three villages, Bajiao Village of Zhen'an Town, Kai County; Dazhu Village and Hongmiao Village of Baisha Town, Nanchuan District, and also satisfy the areas' water demands for agricultural irrigation and livestock production.
Most of the households in the three villages formerly relied on water from wells, originating from natural rains, for domestic consumption and agricultural production. Without proper sanitation, the water quality was not guaranteed. The Caterpillar Foundation joined hands with the China Women's Development Foundation to build up small-sized centralized water supply systems, providing local people with access to clean water and creating conditions for an improved economic situation.
The small-sized centralized water supply systems built for people and livestock include facilities for water treatment, a retaining dam and reservoir. They will provide villagers with water for their domestic lives as well as agricultural irrigation, covering over 500 mu of cultivated land and over 200 mu of vegetable plots, as well as livestock production involving 1,150 animals. The projects satisfy the water demands for local agricultural development, and enable the villages to build livestock production and agricultural cultivation bases, which could provide jobs to local women and help farmers increase their incomes.
Additionally, safe drinking water brochures have been given out to 3,600 villagers from 886 households, while experts were invited to give lectures on safe drinking water and disease prevention to about 4,100 villagers from local and neighboring villages.
Caterpillar Foundation Supports Emergency Education for Left-behind Children
As a part of the efforts by the Disaster Preparedness and Mitigation Special Fund with China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation (CFPA), "Keep the Children Company Project - Safety Education for Left-behind Kids" series training was held in Hejiang County and Xuyong County, Luzhou City; Anyue County, Ziyang City; Zizhong County, Neijiang City and Hanyuan County, Ya'an City of Sichuan Province from August 15 to 30. The training program aims to teach children emergency knowledge when facing natural disasters, as well as drowning prevention, sexual abuse prevention, food safety, and children's rights etc. Through parents and kids bonding activities and in-class lessons, the training aims to help children identify risks in their daily lives, increase their safety awareness, learn self-rescuing skills, and improve their abilities to stay away from risks and protect themselves. The training also facilitates the positive interaction and communication between parents and their children.
There are over 61 million left-behind children in Chinese rural areas, accounting for 22% of the national total. They are 8% more likely to suffer accidental injuries. The training will continue in Nanjiang County and Tongjiang County, Bazhong City; Tongchuan District, Dazhou City; Yingshan County and Gaoping District, Nanchong City successively this winter, benefiting about 35,000 left-behind children.

The purpose was to bolster the Disaster Preparedness and Mitigation Special Fund jointly set up by the Caterpillar Foundation, Give2Asia and CFPA, and call on more enterprises and organizations to make donations before disasters, explore the construction of a disaster preparedness and mitigation system, with the objective to help improve the efficiency of disaster relief work.
